A white Christmas for Atlanta, GA (CNN) — An advancing blizzard in the northeastern United States on Sunday led officials in the region to declare weather emergencies, forced the postponement of a scheduled National Football League game in Philadelphia and grounded some homeward-bound Christmas travelers. Governors on Sunday declared a state of emergency in Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts in advance of the approaching storm. The mayors of Philadelphia and Boston also called snow emergencies. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick announced that the advancing storm will put the commonwealth in a state of emergency starting at 3 pm Patrick’s early afternoon announcement followed declarations of snow emergencies in Boston and Philadelphia. After the early white settlers were driven away by Indian raids, the community was reorganized under the name Arundel in 1718 in honor of the Earl of Arundel. In 1821 its name was changed to Kennebunk Port. Nearly a century later, on April 1st, 1915, a new town was created from Kennebunk Port to be known as North Kennebunkport. Its name was changed in 1957 to Arundel. Thus, the new Arundel occupies a small portion of the town so named in 1719. Cape Porpoise remains as a coastal village in the town, along with Goose Rocks Beach another seaside settlement. In recent years Kennebunkport has become famous for visits by the two Presidents Bush – George HW (the father) and George W. (the son). The elder Bush has a summer residence in the community.

After Gorges’ death, his lands were claimed by the Massachusetts Bay Company. York was incorporated from a portion of the defuct Georgeana in 1652, making it the second oldest town in Maine. Attacked by Indians several times during the colonial era, the town had to be rebuilt on higher ground. As the provincial capital, York enjoyed great prosperity, serving as a port for trade with the West Indies. John Hancock, one of America’s founding fathers and the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence, was a notable local merchant; his establishment now houses a historical museum. Though trade would wane after President Thomas Jefferson’s embargo, York emerged by the late 19th century as a popular summer resort.
